For the past 4 years, Russ, one of the Canadian tenants of Oak Haven RV Park puts on an event he named Black and White.
He encourages everyone to wear something black and white. The club house is decorated in a black and white theme.
He asks everyone to bring a gift to donate to charity, either wrapped or not, to be auctioned off and the proceeds donated to the local charity. Last year the club house was packed with people, even spilling out into the lanai. This year however, with the flu going around the park there were at least 45 empty chairs in the club house. Russ was worried about the amount of donations and bids for the items would be on the low side this year.
He would hold up a gift and people would bid until the bidding stopped. He would then hand the gift to one of four of the “runners” (which I was one of them) to deliver the gift and collect their bid. You would think this sounds a little boring, but Russ has a way of getting people excited and actually bidding more when the bidding slowes down. Fun and laughs were had all through the night. Especially when someone showed the wrapped gift he bid $50 for and it turned out to be a puzzle! We also bid and won on a couple great gifts. One being this “Sweedish Weave” blanket hand made by one of our friends here at the park. The photo doesn’t do it justice, and Wilma and I will treasure this blanket for many many years.
As Russ got down to the last gift to auction off, he gave a heartful, touching thank you to all for making this event a huge success. We raised $2300.00 for the local charity. It really makes a person feel great to be able to participate in such an event.
Until next time, be safe and God Bless.
